In my youth, I practiced Catholicism with sincerity and devotion, because that's what I was taught to do by my parents, and the religious leaders at the Catholic schools I attended. At the age of 13 I turned away from God and called myself an atheist. One of the biggest reasons for this was that I felt the quarterly confessions, penance prayers, weekly mass and communions were forced onto us. We were forced to go through the motions, we had religion, but the church was void of Christ because we didn't have a relationship with Him, nor were we taught how to have a relationship with Him. The priests placed themselves firmly between us, the parishioners, and God.
The relationship you have with God our heavenly father is directly reflected in the relationship you have with your birth father as well, because he is meant to be the head of the household and teach you how to live righteously under God. My father was absent because all he did was work and sleep, and so I believed God was also absent in my life. Someone once asked me when I developed the understanding my birth father was absent and I said when I was 13 years old. Then they pointed out it was no coincidence I turned away from the Lord at 13 too! I genuinely felt like I was alone in the world from a very young age.
After being saved by Jesus later in life, I grew in my faith and deepened my relationship with Christ. I came to realize that many of the teachings and practices I once held dear in childhood were not aligned with biblical truth. This led me on a journey of repentance and transformation, embracing Christianity as the true expression of my faith. I want to share with you 7 reasons why I have repented from practicing Catholicism, highlighting the ways in which my eyes were opened to the profound differences between religious tradition and the living Word of God.
The Bible teaches us that we’re not to bow down to statues, it’s one of the 10 Commandments. The Catholic church says you can make statues of Mary, the saints, and even Jesus on the cross, and bow down to them. I was taught to kneel before the statue of Jesus every time I entered the church.
The Bible teaches us that Jesus is the only mediator between God and man. The Catholic church teaches that Mary is a co-mediator with Christ, and that you can reach Christ through the saints who would mediate for you.
Now I know what Catholics say, that Revelation 5:8 declares the prayers of the saints are delivered to Jesus. But who are the “saints” mentioned in this verse? You would assume they’re talking about the men whom the Pope declared to be saints. But that’s not biblical either, and it brings me to my next point.
The Bible teaches us that all Christian’s are saints and priests in Ephesians 1, and 1 Peter 2. The Catholic church teaches that priests are a special set within the community who should be treated differently, and that the saints are righteous men declared by the Pope.
The Bible teaches that Christ offered His sacrifice on the cross once and for all. The Catholic church teaches that they offer Christ’s body every time they do mass, and only a priest can consecrate the bread for the Eucharist.
All of us are commanded to break bread, not just the Catholic priests, it’s just that they’ve turned it into a priestly sacrament and restricted anyone else’s from doing it. (Technically all believers are priests anyway, remember point #3!)
The Bible teaches us that we should call no religious leader father, nor anyone on earth by that title because it is reserved for the Lord. Catholics call the priests, bishops and pope father, and demand we all address them by that title.
The Bible teaches us not to pray in vain repetition. The Catholic church says that if you want forgiveness you have to pray a certain prayer whether it’s the Lords Prayer or the Hail Mary, and you have to repeat it a certain number of times. They even made Rosary beads to count the repetitions.
The Bible teaches us that you must confess your sins to God, that only God can forgive sins, and that Jesus covers our sin when we believe in Him. The Catholic church says that you must confess your sins to the priest, and then pay the penance which is repeated prayers, to obtain forgiveness.
I hope you enjoyed this Bible study, may the Lord’s face shine upon you as you walk in obedience to His Word.
