Tinnitus.
For such a tiny problem, it can cause so much noise.
Tinnitus affects 10-25% of the population, including over 50 million people in the US alone. You can be a beacon of hope for countless people just by sharing this post, because the statistics show that 1 in 4 people you know need to see this!
For a small number of people, they can trace ringing in the ears to a physical event that caused damage to the ear canal, like an accident, explosion, diving incident, flying incident, or exposure to extremely loud noises over a prolonged period of time. This is known as “organic tinnitus”.
But, for the vast majority, there’s no explanation given for the cause of it.
Until now…
The name itself is a giveaway! In my realm of Regenerative Detoxification, anything that ends with “itus/itis” points to an adrenal weakness, and the peer reviewed medical literature confirms it.

I read the data so you don’t have to.
It shows that stress, impaired nerve function, and a dysregulation of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis is at the root of ringing in the ears.
Let me explain. Your hypothalamus is located in your brain, and it is responsible for producing hormones that regulate heart rate, body temperature, hunger, and the sleep-wake cycle. Cortisol is one of the primary hormones used to regulate these functions.
Your pituitary gland sits below your hypothalamus, and is responsible for making a variety of hormones that control all of your other glands. It’s considered to be the master of the endocrine system.
Your adrenal glands sit on top of your kidneys. They produce many important hormones, including cortisol, aldosterone and adrenaline. The adrenal hormones help regulate several bodily functions including metabolism, blood pressure and your body's response to stress.
The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is a communication system between three organs. It's crucial for your body's stress management. These endocrine system organs create a bio-feedback loop of hormones to enact and regulate your body's stress response.
The HPA axis utilizes your nervous system to relay the data in the bio-feedback loop. Particularly, it uses the vagus nerve which is your body’s largest cranial nerve and runs from your transverse colon (mid abdomen) to your brain. You have one vagus nerve on your left side, and one on your right side. Both sides wrap around your vocal cords, and also branch out into the auditory ear canal.
When you’re stressed your body produces higher levels of cortisol, the stress hormone. Prolonged periods of stress and childhood trauma can permanently elevate cortisol. It means you’re constantly running in fight or flight stress mode, which I’m sure you’ve heard about before. It’s a constant state of stress and it wreaks havoc on your entire nervous system, as well as all the processes and functions of your body. Excess cortisol for instance, can cause insomnia, weight gain, it shuts down your digestive system and leads to nutrient deficiencies. Stress can also impact the structure of your nerves which relay all of this information across the HPA axis.
Continual stress and elevated cortisol dysregulates the HPA axis. It means the signal traveling between your adrenals and brain via the vagus nerve is not being communicated properly.
It’s like when you’re trying to tune in your radio to a particular station, and you’re one dial off. You can kinda her the music, but there’s lots of static and interference. Well, HPA axis dysregulation is the same!
And guess what…
Tinnitus, ringing in your ears, is the static and interference of your nervous system being audibly heard through the vagus nerve as it travels through your auditory ear canal.
Cortisol, the stress hormone, strums your nervous system like it’s strumming a guitar, and you literally hear the chords as ringing in your ears.
Cortisol also burns through vitamin B12 depleting your stores. Stay with me now… B12 is vital for healthy nerves. B12 is also required to regulate homocysteine levels, an inflammatory amino acid in your body.
The medical literature on tinnitus showed:
Here’s one more interesting fact. Around 44% of the population have a gene variation known as MTHFR, and the MTHFR gene controls how your body processes vitamin B12 and homocysteine which means it could be an underlying factor behind tinnitus. Genes load the gun, stress pulls the trigger.
Symptoms of tinnitus appear at random because it’s related to the processes of your body like cortisol, homocysteine, and glucocorticoid levels and how that affects your nervous system rather than external environmental triggers that you can track. Often times highly stressed individuals have become so accustomed to stress that they don’t even know they’re stressed anymore which only further masks the cause.
Now let’s address a few rumors about tinnitus:
Based on the scientific literature, as well as my experience as a Regenerative Detoxification Specialist, here’s what I would do to combat ringing in the ears.
✅ Decrease cortisol. The best supplement for that is Alleviate.
✅ Increase B12. While you're at it, why not increase the complete set of B vitamins in a bioactive form that your body can use straight away. Check out Methyl B, my methylated multi B vitamin supplement..
✅ Stimulate the vagus nerve to regulate the HPA axis. The best way to do this, in alignment with God’s grand design, is to put on some worship music and sing your heart out to activate your vagus nerve so you can experience a peace that only the Lord can deliver. Remember, the vagus nerve runs through your vocal cords and ear canal! Science shows that both singing and hearing can stimulate the nerve for a positive response.
My wife’s Spotify worship playlist should be a daily destination.

And if you sing worship and praise to the Lord daily, you’re actually going to build resilience while rewiring your body’s stress response over time.
“So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise. Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do. Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, and making music to the Lord in your hearts. And give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
~ Ephesians 5:15-20
The Lord wants you to sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. He commands us to worship like King David singing and dancing in the streets, because He knows how essential it is for the optimal functioning of the vagus nerve and HPA axis. Be bold, be obedient, and watch your life and health transform.

✅ If you live with someone who has tinnitus, then do your best to create a peaceful and nurturing environment where that person can relax, because they’re already highly strung and don’t need any added stress.
✅ If you’re struggling with childhood trauma, PTSD or CPTSD that contributes to elevated cortisol and a heightened stress response, then there are psychotherapeutic modalities that can help which include EMDR and Brainspotting. But honestly, Jesus can help more than anyone on this planet to overcome traumas. My beautiful wife is living proof of that. If you haven’t watched her testimony yet you can do so here:
